How car dealerships make money: the five profit centers
New cars, used cars, F&I, service and parts, and manufacturer money: where a dealership’s profit comes from, and what it means if you sell to dealers.
How do car dealerships make money
A dealership is several businesses under one roof, and the new car on the showroom floor is rarely the biggest earner. For anyone selling to dealers, knowing which department makes the money tells you whose problem is worth solving. These are the five profit centers. NADA publishes the yearly figures for the average dealership in NADA Data.
New vehicle sales
Variable operations
Margins on new cars are thin because shoppers can compare prices across stores. Dealers make it work on volume, on manufacturer money for hitting targets, and on everything that follows the sale: the trade-in, financing and future service.
- Owner: general sales manager and new car manager
Used vehicle sales
Variable operations
Dealers buy trade-ins and auction cars, recondition them and resell them. Profit depends on buying at the right price and selling before the car ages on the lot.
- Owner: used car manager
Finance and insurance (F&I)
Variable operations
The dealer arranges the loan and is paid by the lender for it, then offers service contracts, GAP coverage and other protection products. Little inventory, high margin per deal.
- Owner: F&I manager or director
Service and parts
Fixed operations
Maintenance, repairs, warranty work paid by the manufacturer, and parts sales. Steady work that keeps paying when car sales slow.
- Owner: fixed operations director
Manufacturer programs
Incentives
Holdback, a share of each new car’s price the manufacturer pays back to the dealer, plus bonuses for hitting sales volume and customer satisfaction targets. Terms vary by brand.
- Owner: dealer principal and general manager
What this means if you sell to dealers
- Tie your pitch to gross profit in one department, and name the department.
- Used cars care about turn and aged inventory; F&I about profit per deal; fixed ops about hours sold and returning customers; new car sales about volume and cost per sale.
- Anything that touches several departments goes to the general manager.
Say which line on the store’s profit and loss statement you move. Dealers read their numbers by department.
